Electric forklifts for retail & wholesale: dock loading and unloading

Xe nâng STILL RX 20 – 8

In a retail distribution centre or a wholesale warehouse, the dock is where all flows meet: supplier goods arrive in containers and store deliveries leave on trucks in fixed time slots. An electric forklift for retail has to run several shifts, manoeuvre inside the truck body and produce no exhaust in a closed warehouse.

Which stages in the retail and wholesale chain need a counterbalance truck?

A counterbalance truck does not replace a reach truck at high racks, but it is the workhorse wherever goods move in and out of vehicles:

  • Goods receipt from suppliers: pulling pallets out of containers and trucks and setting them down in the checking area. Mixed carton pallets need gentle handling.
  • Internal transfer: moving checked pallets from receiving to the rack aisle or the put-away buffer.
  • Dispatch to stores: loading full or mixed pallets onto trucks by delivery route.
  • Wholesale sites with yards: bulky household goods or materials often move both indoors and outdoors.

Goods and operating rhythm in the sector

Retail volumes swing strongly with the season: promotions and holidays sharply increase inbound and outbound trucks while the dock area stays the same. Wholesale warehouses handle more full pallets and longer runs from dock to rack. Common to both: the truck must be ready when the lorry docks, and drivers need good visibility because the dock is always busy with people and pallet trucks. The deciding factors are usually truck size relative to the vehicle body, intermediate charging and cornering assistance.

STILL models for retail and wholesale warehouses

STILL RX 20: the multi-shift workhorse at the dock

The STILL RX 20 covers 1.4 to 2 tonnes with a top speed of 20 km/h. STILL states that the RX 20 shows its strength in two- or three-shift operation, including goods-in and goods-out in trade. The Li-Ion version supports intermediate charging: just 30 minutes of charging can add several hours of operation, which suits truck schedules bunched in the early morning and late afternoon.

STILL RXE 10 – 16C: compact enough to work inside the truck

The three-wheel STILL RXE 10 – 16C (1.0 to 1.6 tonnes) is presented by STILL for exactly this setting, the joint warehouses of large retailers: loading and unloading HGVs and containers and moving pallets in the warehouse. Its compact size, responsive steering and standard Curve Speed Control keep it safe in tight bends.

STILL RCE 15 – 20: for occasional use

The STILL RCE 15 – 20 is a three- and four-wheel electric forklift that the source names for online retailers, wholesalers and DIY stores. It suits occasional transport and stacking tasks indoors or outdoors; the Li-Ion version has a quick-charging port on the side for distributed opportunity charging.

STILL SXV-CB 10: stand-on and agile

For small warehouses or replenishment areas, the SXV-CB 10 lifts 1,000 kg on cantilever forks, has a small turning radius and a low step that suits work mixing driving with checking goods.

For loads above 2 tonnes or tall pallets of beverages, also look at the RX 60 range and read 3-wheel vs 4-wheel electric forklift before deciding. The full counterbalance range is in the electric forklifts category.

Points to check when deploying in a retail warehouse

  • Measure container door height, truck body height and dock levellers to choose a mast with a suitable closed height.
  • Place charging points close to the dock so Li-Ion trucks can charge while waiting for trucks.
  • Separate pedestrian and truck routes at the dock.

Frequently asked questions

Should a retail warehouse choose a 3-wheel or 4-wheel electric forklift?

If the truck spends most of its time inside lorries, containers and narrow aisles, a three-wheeler such as the RXE 10 – 16C has the manoeuvrability advantage. For longer runs, yard work or heavier loads, a four-wheeler such as the RX 20 is the better fit.

Can an electric forklift cover two continuous shifts at the dock?

For the RX 20 Li-Ion, STILL states that 30 minutes of charging can add several hours of operation, so you can charge during breaks or while waiting for trucks.

A wholesaler uses the truck only occasionally. Is a premium truck needed?

Not necessarily. The RCE 15 – 20 is positioned for occasional tasks at wholesalers and online retailers.
