Cold Storage Forklifts: What to Consider

Xe nâng reach truck STILL FM-X

Cold stores and freezer warehouses are the harshest environment for both people and equipment. Choosing a cold storage forklift is not only about capacity and lift height; you also need to consider the battery, the cab, operator comfort and the condensation that forms when trucks move between temperature zones. This article covers the key points to check before you invest.

What challenges does cold storage pose for forklifts?

Low temperatures affect almost every part of a forklift. Batteries lose performance, hydraulic oil thickens, rubber and plastics stiffen, and floors can become slippery from condensation or ice. Operators working in the cold tire quickly, react more slowly and lose dexterity in heavy protective clothing.

In addition, cold stores are expensive to build and run, so every square metre counts. Operators usually want high racking and narrow aisles, which means the truck must be precise and stable at height. Doors should be opened as rarely and briefly as possible to retain the cold, so handling speed matters too.

Electric trucks are the default choice

A cold store is an enclosed space holding food, pharmaceuticals or other sensitive goods. Combustion-engine forklifts produce exhaust and heat on site, so they are rarely suitable. Electric forklifts, reach trucks, stackers and electric pallet trucks are the main equipment groups for cold storage. For a general comparison of the two drive types, see electric vs diesel forklift.

Battery: the deciding factor in the cold

At low temperatures, lead-acid batteries lose usable capacity and charge more slowly, and changing or charging them usually has to happen outside the cold store. Lithium-ion batteries allow interim charging during breaks, need no topping-up and have electronics that manage each cell.

According to STILL, the STILL RX 20 gets its energy from Li-Ion batteries suitable for cold storage, and during operation an intelligent electronics system monitors every battery cell in real time. When planning, discuss the battery and charger configuration for your store’s temperature range with the supplier. Learn more in lithium-ion vs lead-acid batteries.

Cab and operator comfort

The operator is the “component” most affected by the cold. A suitable cab helps operators work longer, more safely and more precisely when handling loads at height.

For the STILL FM-X reach truck, STILL offers a choice of full cabin, weather protection cabin or cold-store cabin, with safety glass, double glazing or polycarbonate, and optionally heated windows. According to the manufacturer, the cold-store cabin keeps the operator warm even when ambient temperatures drop to -30 degrees Celsius. The FM-X also offers a storage height of up to 14 metres and active load stabilisation that reduces mast vibration at height, which suits cold stores that need to make full use of vertical space.

Cold storage forklift comparison by truck type

Truck type Typical role Cold storage considerations
Reach truck High racking, narrow aisles Cold-store cabin, heated glass, stability at height
Electric counterbalance forklift Loading at the door, buffer zone Battery suited to low temperatures, floor grip
Electric pallet truck Horizontal transport, truck loading Time spent moving in and out, slippery floors
Stacker Medium-height stacking, small stores Frequency of use, battery

Condensation and moving in and out of the store

When a truck drives from the cold store into a warm, humid area, moisture condenses on metal surfaces and electronic components. This is particularly noticeable in a hot, humid climate like Vietnam’s. Repeated condensation can cause corrosion and affect electrical connectors and sensors.

  • Zone your trucks: avoid having one truck constantly travelling between deep-freeze and hot, humid areas.
  • Set up an ante-room at the store entrance to reduce sudden temperature changes.
  • Agree a cold-store configuration with your supplier: hydraulic oil, grease, protection of electrical components.
  • Inspect floors regularly and deal with condensation and ice to prevent slipping.

Layout, racking and safety

Forklifts and racking in a cold store should be designed together. Aisle width, rack height and pallet type determine the truck type and vice versa. See our racking systems to optimise storage density. Because visibility in a cold store can be affected by mist, warning lights and internal traffic rules deserve extra attention.

Maintenance for trucks working in cold storage should also be more frequent than in standard warehouses. Contact our maintenance and repair team to set up a suitable schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Can a standard forklift be used in a cold store?

Some trucks can work briefly in chilled areas, but for deep-freeze stores you should choose a truck configured for cold environments. Provide the temperature range and how long the truck stays inside so the supplier can advise correctly.

Are lithium-ion batteries suitable for cold storage?

Lithium-ion batteries allow interim charging and need no topping-up, an advantage for multi-shift stores. STILL states that the Li-Ion batteries of the STILL RX 20 are suitable for cold storage. The exact configuration should be advised for each store.

Is a cold-store cabin necessary?

If operators work continuously in a freezer, a cold-store cabin reduces fatigue and improves precision. On the STILL FM-X it is one of the cabin options.

How often should cold storage forklifts be serviced?

Frequency depends on working intensity and temperature. In general, they should be checked more often than trucks in standard warehouses; a technician will recommend a specific schedule.
